WHAT MAKES THIS LOCATION SO SPECIAL

Occom Pond and nearby Rope Ferry Road reflect an important chapter in Hanover's early development and connection to Dartmouth College.

Rope Ferry Road takes its name from an 18th-century rope-operated ferry that once crossed the Connecticut River between Hanover and Norwich, Vermont. Before bridges spanned the river, this ferry provided a vital link for travelers, goods, and students heading to Dartmouth. Although the ferry eventually disappeared as permanent bridges were built, the road’s historic name remains a reminder of Hanover’s early transportation routes.

Occom Pond, located just east of downtown Hanover, was created around 1900 when local residents and Dartmouth affiliates dammed a marshy valley to form a small recreational pond. The pond was named in honor of Samson Occom, whose fundraising efforts in the 18th century helped support the founding of Dartmouth College.

Over time, Occom Pond has become a beloved community gathering place. Skating, hockey, and outdoor recreation have long drawn both Dartmouth students and Hanover residents. The pond and surrounding neighborhood remain one of Hanover’s most recognizable and scenic historic areas.

Just west of the pond lies Pine Park, a nearly 100-acre woodland preserved by the Pine Park Association, formed in 1905 by local residents to protect the forest along the river from commercial logging. Today the park features miles of public trails–with the main sledding hill located adjacent to 2 Hilton Field Lane–and is one of Hanover’s oldest conserved natural areas, linking the neighborhoods around Occom Pond and Rope Ferry Road to the Connecticut River.

Together, Occom Pond, Rope Ferry Road, and Pine Park form one of Hanover’s most historic and scenic landscapes, blending early transportation history, conservation, and outdoor recreation.
